Guess what? Volume 1 of Extension Squad just came out!
In a nutshell, Extension Squad is an illustrated adventure novella series written by R.M. Scheller. I had the privilege of beta-reading for her and joining her street team, so I’m super excited to tell you all about this story.
If you’re still wondering what in the world Extension Squad is and why you’re supposed to be excited about it, don’t worry. You’ve come to the right place, because that is exactly what this post will be covering.
I love this volume of Extension Squad for buckets and buckets of reasons. There are so many things that make it super original and a lot of fun. I could go on and on about how cool it is, but instead, here are just seven big reasons for you to read it, plus a couple slideshows. =)
7 Reasons to Read EXTENSION SQUAD Vol. 1
#1: The book has an epic premise, a conflicted protagonist, and some strong themes about heroism.
Austin calls it honor. The others call it sulking. Either way, they’re all on death row.
The law is simple: a life for a life, no matter the circumstances. When aspiring hero Austin takes a life in defense of another person, he’s thrown in with the cutthroats on death row. Even though they’re doomed to die, they’re given an extension—by doing the grunt work for the heroes, they can prolong the time until they’re killed.
But Austin refuses to play that game. If he’s going to die sooner or later anyway, he’ll do so with his pride intact. The only question is whether he has the resolve to see it through.
#2: The characters have some really fun superpowers, and the powers always have weaknesses, too. One character can give people electrical shocks, but he has to shock himself at the same time.
#3: The whole cast of characters is a lot of fun. When I beta-read the story, my favorite character was Jax, a big intimidating guy who can be pretty philosophical.
#4: It’s ILLUSTRATED. Have you ever read manga? The book is kind of like that, except it’s American and it’s more story-oriented. The illustrator is Heather Rose, and you can check out her amazing art right here: instagram.com/heatherroseiv
#5: The author is just a great person. I work with Rachel as a Community Assistant for the Young Writer’s Workshop, and we love her. She has helped me so much with editing, and she has an awesome sense of humor. =) When you pre-order the book, you are helping a real author beat the Amazon algorithms.
#6: Rachel doesn’t leave all the adventure to her characters. She has experience as an EMT and has dabbled in parkour, which adds authenticity to her adventure stories.
#7: The books in Extension Squad are very short, and they’re a series. The first one is a standalone, so try it out. If you love the world and the characters, there will be more to come.
