Happy belated Good Friday and early Easter, everyone! Happy “Silent Saturday” too!
Today’s post is a little different. Instead of an article, I have a poem/song thing for y’all. I wrote it on the youth group retreat I went on this winter. Now, I’m not a real poet (I only write poems occasionally, just when I’m inspired), nor a musician (which is why I couldn’t write down the music notes), but I hope this encourages you to take another look at the Crucifixion and Resurrection.
I’m pretty sure you guys are all too familiar with the Easter story already. If you go to church on normal Easters, you probably know that Jesus died a horrible death on a cross, laid dead in a tomb for three days, and rose again on Easter Sunday to save us from our sins and God’s wrath.
Now, this story isn’t really as fun as some stories in the Bible, but it is the most important one. This story is the hope of every believer. It’s why we can go on day after day pursuing God, even though we deserve every bit as gruesome a death as Jesus. This is our assurance of heaven and eternal life when we die.
I hope this piece I wrote helps you to remember the Easter story with fresh eyes and worship Jesus in your heart for what He has done.
Hung Above Them All
Verse 1
Jesus died for me, the unworthy,
On an ugly cross very tall.
They looked down on Him with disgust,
Though He truly hung above them all.
Chorus 1
But then He got up!
Christ has overcome the death
That once seized his flesh and bone.
He got up!
Christ has conquered the grave,
He has rolled away the stone.
He got up, He got up.
[Chorus 1]
Verse 2
He took His last breath and He was dead.
Heart stopped beating, blood turned cold.
Then He paid for my sins in full,
Firmly in God’s wrath’s painful hold.
[Chorus 1]
Bridge
He drank the very last drop
Of my bitter poison cup.
But he didn’t stop there.
No, He got up.
Chorus 2
He got up!
Christ has overcome the death
That once seized his flesh and bone.
He got up!
Christ has conquered the grave,
He has rolled away the stone.
He got up, He got up.
What Do You Think?
Did you like my poem/song thing? Should I post another in the future? What are you doing to celebrate Easter? Have you ever had an Easter this unusual before?
Very good poem, if I do say so myself.
We may be spending Easter Sunday a little differently, but Christians can still hold fast to the truth that Christ rose from the grave. Great poem, Eliana!
Thanks! 😉 And yes, amen to that! I wrote that poem before all the coronavirus craziness, but that beautiful truth still stands.
Meaningful and thought-provoking lyrics! We would love to hear the tune that you had in mind. Could you sing or hum the notes to your Dad and Mom and ask one of them to write the notes? Your Dad played the trombone in high school so we know he is quite familiar with musical scores.
Have a wonderful time celebrating Jesus’ resurrection with your family!
Thank you! Yes, his trombone is still in his closet. ? Mom and Dad had also suggested that I get one of my more musically-talented siblings to write it down. I have tried to get them to write down other tunes in my head, but I’m a little too impatient to get it just right, and my bar for getting it the way it sounded in my head is a little too high. I should try again with this song sometime though.
Hope you had a lovely Easter!
Happy Easter! He is Risen!
I also wish I could hear the melody. I like the sense of joy and triumph in the repeated line ‘He got up!’
This definitely is my strangest Easter that I can remember. Can’t go to church, and a snowstorm coming in. It’s just starting to ‘stick’ as I write this. I pray that losing lots of distractions helps people to focus on why we celebrate Easter. It’s not Easter egg hunts, big meals, dressing up, or candy. He is risen and that is why we can have hope, if we put our trust in Him.
He is risen indeed!
Thanks! I will need to see about getting it written down. =)
Yes, these are certainly strange times. But amen to that! Easter is about SO much more.
