I’ve struggled with it. You’ve struggled with it. We all have. Does God really exist? Billions of people think that the Bible is false, and Christians are sometimes tempted to believe them. Jesus can start to look like a fairytale at times because of how bad the world around us is.
“Is God real?” This question isn’t bad in itself, but we need to make sure we come to the right conclusion. We need to fight the lies in our hearts with truth.
Of course, the only truth that we can stand on is the Bible. But today I am going to give you a tool you can even use if you are doubting the Bible itself.
We’re going to step into the dark side.
We’re going to explore questions like “What if God isn’t real?”. Once we step into the shoes of someone who doesn’t believe in God, the Word, or the true Jesus, we’ll be able to see how little sense their world makes. Then we will see even more clearly that God is real–no doubt about it.
Q1: What if God isn’t real?
Imagine that a man picks up a watch on the beach. He observes it, and he notes how its arms move in precise amounts of time, how its ticks are uniform, and how all of the gears inside work together. Then he declares that it was formed by chance.
Ridiculous, right? If the watch had such an intelligent design, it must have been made by an intelligent designer. Bread is baked by a baker, a table is made by a carpenter, a picture is painted by a painter–everything is made by something. And look around you… It’s obvious the world was made by an intelligent being. The gravity, the sun, the atoms and their electrons, your lungs and brain, time, the three dimensions, logic, and morals…
If God weren’t real, none of this would be here. And even if something (the world) came out of nothing, how do you explain logic and morals? If people evolved from apes by a lot of inferior beings dying, then why is it not ok to murder? Why should anybody be kind to one another?
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. – Psalm 14:1 (ESV)
Here’s a link to an episode of a really cool podcast that explains this much better than I can: https://www.ageofminority.com/2019/11/01/episode-154-the-existence-of-god-episode/
Q2: What if the Bible is wrong?
This one’s easy. Think about what you would say if someone told you they didn’t believe in the existence of Abraham Lincoln. I would say something like, “Really?! Tons of people have seen him and written about him, and you don’t believe any of them?”
Same with the Bible. If you decide to stop believing the Bible, you might as well stop believing in Abraham Lincoln. And the Bible has so much evidence behind it! Think about it…
- If you took a few authors from the same generation, country, language, etc., and asked them each for their opinion on one controversial topic, undoubtedly, they would not agree. The Bible was written in three languages, over a span of roughly 1,600 years, by over 40 authors from every walk of life. And yet they all agree!
- Before printers were invented, the Old Testament was copied by hand–but very, very careful hands. The Jewish copyists did their work by strict rules. For example, they copied only one letter at a time. And, if a single mistake was found, they destroyed the entire scroll.
- The New Testament is even more reliable than old books like Caesar, Plato, and Aristotle. Aristotle was written 384-322 B.C., but the earliest copies are from A.D. 1,100– a 1,400-year gap! And there are only five manuscripts copies in existence. Whereas the New Testament was written A.D. 40-100 and the earliest copies were made A.D. 125–only (at the smallest) a 25-year gap! And there are over 24,000 manuscript copies!
- See what Paul said to King Agrippa and Festus, a Roman governor:
And as he was saying these things in his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are out of your mind; your great learning is driving you out of your mind.” But Paul said, “I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking true and rational words. For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak boldly. For I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this has not been done in a corner. – Acts 26: 24-26 (ESV)
The stuff in the Bible didn’t happen in “a corner”. There were witnesses–lots of them! There are four accounts of Jesus’ life in the Bible alone, and more outside the Bible. You can’t dismiss all this proof.
(These facts are from Don’t Check Your Brains at the Door by Bob Hostetler and Josh McDowell. It is an older book but a good one, and it is directed at teens and busts lots of myths about Christianity. You should read it!)
There are even atheists who can’t deny that Jesus was a real person!

Assuming He was a real person…
Q3: What if Jesus isn’t God?
Many think that Jesus was a good prophet or just a charismatic teacher. “He didn’t really perform miracles or raise himself from the dead, but he was a good man,” they say.
Well, if we assume that Jesus was only human, that means the apostles were defending lies. Paul, Peter, Andrew, Thomas, Philip, Matthew, Bartholomew, James, Simon, Matthias, John, and others were beheaded, crucified, stabbed, stoned, clubbed, and burned for lies. And they would have known that it was a lie. They claimed to have seen Jesus resurrected after his death. Why would they endure persecution for something they knew wasn’t true? They would not admit that Jesus was not God.
I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t die for a lie.
The fact the apostles would let themselves be persecuted like this would only make sense if Jesus was the true God. The God who came to earth, fulfilled the prophecies and brought us the good news. Who lived a perfect life, died on a cross, and rose again that he might save those who followed him from the holy wrath of God against their sins.
That’s a truth worth dying for.
Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” – John 20:28-29 (ESV)

What do you think?
Do you like apologetics? What are other arguments for these questions?
Excellent points demonstrating the existance of God the Creator and the authenticity of the Bible. Another one is the hundreds of prophecies, some quite detailed, mentioned in the Old Testament that actually occurred hundreds of years afterwards.
Thank you! Yes! There are so many prophecies and it is amazing how detailed and accurate they are!
Amen! Beautiful truths, Sweetheart! <3
Thanks! =)
Wonderful, Eliana! And Israel is an incredible proof, also!
Thank you! Yes, I agree!
Nice work, Eliana! I’ll throw some oddball comments out there. As said above, Israel is incredible proof. Many people believe in some sort of God, but think it backward to believe in a devil and demons the way the Bible describes them. Just look at the anti-Semitism that comes back generation after generation, century after century. The horrible lies and things done to them again and again when they have not afflicted the world like some of their persecutors have. If that doesn’t prove the existence of a devil who hates God’s chosen race, what could?
Also, for the hard-core materialists, there is the challenge of beauty. What is the survival benefit of finding music beautiful? Or hoarfrost? Or bubbles? A world of stark survival has no place for beauty that is not also useful. It all reminds me of Puddleglum’s great speech to the witch in ‘The Silver Chair’–the atheist/agnostic worldview is so unattractive, inferior, even hideous as to be unbearable to truly live in accordance with it.
Ooh, those are some good thoughts. Thank you for sharing. =)
True, true, true! Thank you for this! 🙂
I love apologetics. And I, along with Joelle, love Pudleglum’s speech in “The Silver Chair.”
Thank you again for this post! 🙂
You’re welcome! =D Thank you for reading!
Eliana, I am late in my reading. Very well done.
There are so many areas we can use. Another is the lives and impact of Jesus disciples. Where did they get power and courage and wisdom from in sharing about Jesus and the spread of early church.
The miracles performed by them and their powerful preaching most of the fishermen and not educated or trained by world standards.
Praise God!
I agree! It is amazing the work God has done through the imperfect church. My church just finished a equipping hour class on church history, and it was fascinating how the God preserved the Truth through all those centuries.
